2  But you can’t substantiate any of your claims, or explain how this fits with Clifton Village closing down.  substantiate – to give proof or show evidence  Who could help you substantiate a story you were telling your parents?

3  We can’t use vague allegations like this. Can’t you tell us anything else?  What text clues helped you figure out the meaning of the word?  vague – not clearly stated

4  The reporters were staring at her. She realized she was beginning to weave.  weave – to move from side to side  What might make a person weave?

5  Then Chester Seward emerged with a rifle firm in his grasp.  emerged – rose, appeared, or became known  What could emerge from the ocean?

6  Determine the meaning of the following word.  Jessie tried to distract herself by listening to the sounds of the hospital: nurses conferring in the halls, carts with squeaky wheels rolling down the corridor,...”  conferring – discussing something in order to make a decision

7  They said the human race would be eternally indebted…I’m so sorry.”  indebted – owing something to someone or something  What might cause you to be indebted to someone?

9  Why was there a diphtheria epidemic?  epidemic – affecting a large number of individuals in an area at the same time  What can we do to avoid an epidemic of an illness?

10  She couldn’t say their names without a quiver in her voice.  quiver - to shake or tremble  What is something that might  make you quiver ?

11  She still didn’t have her full strength back after the sickness, and her legs trembled a little from the exertion.  exertion – physical or mental effort  Show how you would feel after a lot of exertion.
