3 Launched in 2002 with a mandate to encourage First Nations, Métis communities, and Aboriginal non-profit organizations to develop locally responsive health promotion and capacity building initiatives in the Vancouver Coastal Health region Currently $717,507 of grants supporting health promotion projects with Aboriginal non-profit organizations and First Nations throughout the region. 5 Current AHIP Priority Areas: Chronic or infectious disease prevention Early childhood development Food security Injury prevention Mental wellness & Self-esteem

6 All successful AHIP projects: Strengthen traditional/cultural practices Build capacity in the community Reduce health inequities Create a supportive environment for health & well-being Have Indigenous practices as main methodologies

7 All successful AHIP projects: Are located within the Vancouver Coastal Health Region. Are administered by First Nations / Aboriginal Organizations or Non-Aboriginal organization in partnership with a First Nations / Aboriginal organization Demonstrate community support & partnerships Facilitate better access to health services

8 What AHIP does not fund: Daycare Costs Resource Libraries Capital Expenditures Research Projects Curriculum Development Conferences / Staff development Activities taking place outside of the Vancouver Coastal Health region

9 2016/2017 AHIP Callout Approx. $300,000 available to support community-based health promotion projects in the VCH region 1-3 year project funding Maximum $40,000 per year
