CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS INVESTIGATION 4: KINETIC ENERGY

KEY CONCEPTS KINETIC ENERGY IS ENERGY OF MOTION. THE PARTICLES IN SUBSTANCES GAIN KINETIC ENERGY AS THEY WARM, AND LOSE KINETIC ENERGY AS THEY COOL.

KEY CONCEPTS MATTER EXPANDS WHEN THE KINETIC ENERGY OF ITS PARTICLES INCREASES; MATTER CONTRACTS WHEN THE KINETIC ENERGY OF ITS PARTICLES DECREASES

KEY CONCEPTS WHEN A VOLUME OF GAS GETS HOT, ITS VOLUME INCREASES, THIS IS CALLED EXPANSION. WHEN A VOLUME OF GAS GETS COLD, ITS VOLUME DECREASES, THIS IS CALLED CONTRACTION KINETIC ENERGY IS ENERGY OF MOTION. GAS PARTICLES ARE ALWAYS MOVING THE SPEED OF GAS PARTICLES DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF KINETC ENERGY.

KEY CONCEPTS FAST MOVING PARTICLES HIT MORE OFTEN AND HARDER, THIS PUSHES THE PARTICLES FARTHER APART. THIS CAUSES THE VOLUME OF GAS TO INCREASE, OR EXPAND. EXPANSION IS DUE TO INCREASED KINETIC ENERGY. Cold tires have less pressure than hot tires.
