2 Definitions Health A range of states with physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social components Life Management Skills The skills that help people realize his or her potential to be well and enjoy life. Infectious Diseases Diseases that are caused by infecting organisms; they can be passes from person to person

3 Definitions Lifestyle Diseases Diseases that are made likely by neglect of the body “When people understand that they have some control over their health, they realize that the responsibility for their health is also theirs.”

4 Age Chronological age Age as measured in years from date of birth Physiological Age Age as estimated from the body’s health and probable life expectancy

5 Conditions of Physiological Age Sleeping regularly and adequately Eating regular meals, including breakfast Engaging in regular physical activity Not smoking Not using Alcohol Keeping weight under control

7 Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual Health How is this type of health created? Maintain a strong sense of self Manages stress with skill and enjoyment, not letting it become overwhelming Handles setbacks without loss of self esteem Is willing to accept new ideas and try new behaviors

8 Physical Health and Preventive Care How is this type of health created? Sleeps enough Maintains appropriate weight No use of recreational drugs Keep yourself in safe situations Use health care when necessary

9 Social Health How is this type of health created? Develops supportive friendships Effectively resolves conflicts Can function in a healthy relationship Understands and excepts his/her sexuality Continues to grow and learn throughout life

12 Definitions Motivations The force that moves people to act Drives Motivations that are inborn not learned, such as hunger, thirst, fear, etc. Commitment A decision adhered to for the long term

13 Definitions Will A person’s intent, which leads to action Self-efficacy A person’s belief in his or her ability to succeed at the task at hand Eustress Stress that can effect a person in a motivating way

14 Why make Behavior Changes? The value of the change How big is the reward Timing How soon the reward will come The costs What is the consequence of seeking the reward Probability How certain is the reward

15 From Awareness to Action The steps that lead to behavior change Awareness “ I could choose to change” Thinking “I know how to change” Emotion “I want to change”

16 From Awareness to Action Decision “I will change” Action “I am changing”

17 Action: Setting Goals Start Small Do not attempt more than is possible Create goals that are attainable Write down the goals Create one big goal and then use smaller goals to attain that goal
