SPEAKING PART 1 2 – 3 min (both students alternatively) What happens? Give information about yourself (p 15,82) Do I answer just yes or no? Always try to give more than just a one-word answer to the examiner's questions. Don't answer with just yes or no. For example, if the examiners ask you what your occupation is, don't just say: 'student.' Say: ' I'm a student in King Saud University.

SPEAKING PART 1 try to sound as natural as possible. If you didn’t hear or understand something: Could you speak more slowly, please? Could you repeat that, please? Make sure you know how to ask the examiner to repeat or explain something that you don't understand. You will not lose marks for doing this.

SPEAKING PART 1 TALK, TALK, TALK Don't sit in silence in the test even if you are nervous. The examiners can't give you a grade if you don't talk. SPEAK CLEARLY Speak clearly so that both examiners and your partner can hear you. WHO DO I TALK TO? Talk to the examiner, not your partner.

SPEAKING PART 1 What’s your name? Say your name, e.g. Noura What’s your surname ? All these mean the same: Surname = family name = second name Learn to spell it, e.g. AL OTAIBI Make sure that you know how to pronounce the English alphabet, especially the vowels or any letter that you know you have problems with.

SPEAKING PART 1 Learn to talk about your age, nationality, where you live, daily routines, likes and dislikes. Age: I am 18 years old Nationality: I am a Saudi citizen Where do you live = where do you come from? I live in Riyadh, in the Olaya area. What do you study? I study English, Maths, computer studies etc What do you do in your free time? I read the Quran, I play with my sister, I help my mother, I do some sewing, I go on the internet, etc

SPEAKING PART 1 ‘Thank you’ When the examiner says ‘Thank you’, it means this part of the exam is over…. we stop talking and wait for more instructions from the examiner The examiner will then say: “In the next part, you are going to talk to each other”

SPEAKING PART 2 time: 2-3 min (both students together) Task Format: You are given some pictures about a situation and you discuss it with the other student

“I am going to describe a situation to you.” Listen very carefully to the examiner when she says this. Look at the picture. She will repeat her instructions. (p 65) Then the examiner will say: “All right? Talk together.” Both students will start discussing the picture. You will hear the instructions of what you should do twice. If you are still not sure of what you have to do, ask the examiner or check with your partner. You can say:' Please can you repeat that?'

SPEAKING PART 2 Pay attention to your partner Look at the person you are listening to and show them that you are interested in what they are saying. talk to your partner, not the examiner. Take Turns Make sure you don't do all the talking. Practice taking turns in conversations, listening to what people say and reacting to their ideas and opinions.

SPEAKING PART 2 Give your opinion E.g. “I think … E.g. “ She should … Elicit opinions from your partner E.g. “What do you think?” Don’t come to a conclusion too quickly E.g. “I agree that she should do this.” It is not important to arrive at a conclusion.

SPEAKING PART 2 What’s it called? If there is something in the picture that you don't know the word for, don't ignore it. Think of a way of explaining it. For example, if you don't know the word for 'blouse', you could say: 'It's a kind of shirt.'

SPEAKING PART 2 You will be marked on how well you talk, and NOT what your opinion is

SPEAKING PART 3 each student in turn: 1 min each Task format: You are each given a color photograph which you talk about for up to one min

SPEAKING PART 3 The examiner wants to know if you know the names of different clothes, colors, types of weather etc. Describe everything (p 26 & 27) As if you are describing it to someone who can’t see the picture The People The Place The Activity The Weather The Objects The time of Day

SPEAKING PART 3 People – what are they doing What are they wearing, colors What are they feeling (if this is obvious) You are not expected to speculate

SPEAKING PART 3 The examiner collects the picture back after each candidate’s turn “Thank you. Can I have the booklet please?”

SPEAKING PART 4 both students interact with each other 3 mins Task format: You have a discussion with the other student about a topic connected with the photos in Part 3. “Your photographs showed …

SPEAKING PART 4 You are expected to: Talk about yourself Discuss with each other your interests Give reasons for your views Elicit the view of your partner Pick up on your partner’s points Show interest in what your partner is saying
