1 Water and Wastewater Treatment

2 Water Treatment 1. Pre-treatment and screening- Screens are used to remove large particles 2. Coagulation and Flocculation- Chemicals such as alum are added which cause the contaminants to stick together and sink 3. Sedimentation- Water is left undisturbed to allow floc to settle to the bottom

3 Water Treatment Continued
4. Filtration-Water runs through a series of filters that trap and remove particles. 5. Disinfection- Chlorine is added to kill bacteria, viruses, and other living organisms. 6. Distribution and Storage- Water is distributed through pipes

4 Wastewater Treatment Primary Treatment
1. Passed through large screen to catch solid objects such as paper, rags, etc. 2. Large tank filters out small particles (sludge) such as food, coffee grounds, etc. 3. Oils are skimmed off the surface

5 Wastewater Treatment Continued
Secondary Treatment 4. Aeration tank to mix with oxygen and bacteria – the bacteria feeds on the waste and the oxygen keeps the bacteria alive 5. Settling tank where chlorine is added to kill the bacteria 6. Water is dechlorinated to lower the chlorine level 7. Water is sent back out to local water source
