Survival Survival would be the theme for the beginning because Phillip’s family and him have to live through the war. Everyday the war is going on and he could get shot by a soldier or get hurt. One of his family members could get shot especially his dad because he goes to work everyday. He had to survive from the boat being torpedoed he could’ve died from falling in the water and hitting his head if Timothy didn’t get him onto the raft. They also need to survive on the raft because if they just sat there they would probably die. They needed to catch fish and reserve lots of water and not look into the sun. If I was on that raft I would really want to go in the water but I would want to survive.

Survival is in the middle of the book to. They have been on the raft for several weeks and they have to preserve water and if they don’t they would probably die on the raft. Also they have to stay out of the water or they will probably get eaten by sharks. One time Phillip fell into the water and felt something hit his leg. That’s an example of surviving. Also on the island they have to find shelter and its especially hard for Phillip because he’s blind. When Timothy leaves him he has to survive on his own for probably an hour or half and hour. There isn’t much food on the island either so they have to take little portions of their food they have.

Survival is end to. Its in the end because they have to prepare for the hurricane. They tie things to a high palm tree so they don’t get washed away. The have to eat a big feast because the fish won’t be back for awhile. During the storm they have to survive it by tying themselves to a tree. Timothy protects Phillip and timothy ends up dying because he was so tired. After the storm Phillip has to reestablish his camp like rebuilding his hut, getting food, finding the fishing poles, and making the signal fire. This is all a struggle because Phillip is blind. So this is going to be hard for him to survive.

Main Characters In the beginning of the book Phillip would be the main character. He is adventurous and stubborn. He is adventurous because he doesn’t think the war is dangerous. He goes out and plays with his friend Henrik Van Boven. His mom doesn’t approve of this but he still goes outside. He could get shot by one of the soldiers. That’s why Phillip and Mrs. Enright are going on the boat. In the beginning Phillip would also be stubborn. He’s stubborn because he doesn’t listen to what his mom says about not going outside. Also when he’s going on the boat he really doesn’t want to so he complains about it. On the raft he doesn’t listen to Timothy about saving the water he yells and says “your saving all the water for yourself” In the beginning of the book Phillip would be the main character. 14 In the middle of the book Phillip is still stubborn and adventurous. He is stubborn when he is arguing that they shouldn’t go onto the island. He says they should just keep going and wait to get rescued on the raft. Also when Phillip doesn’t let Timothy go away because he is scared that someone or something will come and get him. So he yells for Timothy and doesn’t let him go away. But later he feels more save on the island and he is ok with it. Phillip is also adventurous. On the raft Timothy said there was land and Phillip freaked out and said where and fell into the water. Also on the island he started to learn walk around and he learned where he was. If he wasn’t so adventurous he wouldn’t have learned the island as well as he did. One day he decided he wanted to climb the cocoanut tree. He succeeded and got the cocoanut.

At the End of the book Phillip is kind of stubborn and adventurous. Phillip has grown from his stubbornness. He has learned so much from Timothy and understands things now. He is stubborn in a way where he doesn’t want to hang out with kids his age anymore because he thinks they are to young. He then spends most of his time going to school and talking with the black people who knew Timothy. His stubbornness would be part of becoming more mature and this shows that being on that island made Phillip become mature. He is also adventurous at the end. On the island he decides to do something Timothy never told him to do. He decides to jump into the hole and get a langosta for him to eat. This shows he is adventurous because Timothy told him never to do this. He was tired of eating fish and wanted a langosta. He got one but something bit his hand. It wouldn’t let go and he got teeth marks and blood all over him. He decided he never wanted to go in that hole again.

Epilogue The Cay is still fresh in my mind. I remember its soft sand and rustling sounds of the lizards. The thin I remember most is when the hurricane. I remember the wave that crashed and sounded like a rifle. I remember Timothy standing in front of me to shield me from the storm. I also remember watching Timothy lay there moaning.

When I arrived on The Cay it didn’t feel any different. Even though throughout most of the time on the little island I was blind I remembered it like I was never blind. I looked around and it looked like everything I imagined when I was sitting alone on The Cay. My parents couldn’t believe that I was living alone for that long on the island.

I was excited and sad to return to The Cay. I was thinking about Timothy the hole way there. It was going to be sad for me because I buried Timothy there. I didn’t think I would cry but I wasn’t sure. I was very excited to because when I left the island I said I wanted to come back and I did. My experience on the Cay made a change in my life. I used to be an immature boy and now I’ve learned to not be rude or prejudice towards people. When I got back to my home in Willemstad I didn’t want to hang out with Henrik because to me he seemed young and immature. Usually I would’ve been glad to hang out with him. I am glad that I went to the Cay because if I didn’t I wouldn’t have learned to be mature.

Musical connection  “To Dr. King’s dream, which can come true if the very young know and understand,”
