Call For Fire Cadet Andes Reference: FM 6-30 Chapter 4

6 Elements of CFF ► Observer Identification ► Warning Order ► Target Location ► Target Description ► Method of Engagement ► Method of Fire and Control

Observer Identification ► Tell the FDC who you are!!! i.e. “alpha one six this is charlie one seven.”

Warning Order ► WARNO just says the type of mission:  Adjust Fire: Only one gun from the battery will fire. Used when the FO believes adjustments will be made before all rounds will be on target.  Fire For Effect: FO is confident all munitions will effect target on first round of firing, all guns in battery fire.  Suppression: Pre planned fire on an inactive target.  Immediate Suppression/Smoke: Used for targets of opportunity. The Observer ID and Warning Order are combined into a single transmission on the radio. “Alpha one six this is charlie one seven, fire for effect over.”

Target Location ► Polar Plot ► Laser Polar Plot ► Shift From Known Point ► Grid: If grid is being used, do not say grid during first transmission. ► Use 6 digit grid coordinate. The target location makes up the second transmission. “Alpha one six this is charlie one seven, fire for effect over.” BREAK “Location: ET123456, over”

Target Description ► Describe the target in detail and size. Include if the target is in cover, include this in the description. Method of Engagement “Platoon of infantry in treeline.” “Column of tanks in the open.” Trajectory can be requested. Guns will fire at low trajectory unless otherwise requested. Attitude: Can be given, not necessary. Danger Close: 600m: Mortars and artillery 750m: Naval guns 5 inch or smaller 1000m: Naval guns bigger than 5 inch 2000m: 16 inch Naval guns

Method of Engagement ► Select type of round:  ICM (Improved Conventional Munition): General Purpose used for troops/armor.  Delay (ICM): Delayed fuse. Used for targets in treelines/bunkers.  W/P (White Phosphorous): Used against equipment i.e. helicopters.  Smoke  Illumination  Copperhead: Laser guided anti armor round: phased out  FASCAM: contains multiple mines “Alpha one six this is charlie one seven, fire for effect over.” BREAK “Location: ET123456, over” BREAK “Platoon of infantry in the open, ICM in effect, over.”

Method of Fire and Control ► On My Command: Guns will fire when the FO tells them to. ► Repeat: Fire again using same data and coordinates.

Message to Observer ► FDC sends information to observer regarding the fire mission.  First letter is battery firing.  Second is rounds being sent.  Third is amount of rounds being sent.  Fourth is target number the FDC assigned to the target. “Message to observer: A, ICM in effect. 4 rounds. Target number 001, over.” Observer reads message back to FDC.

Fire Mission ► “Shot over” - “Shot out.” Round is in the air. ► “Splash over” – “Splash out” Three Seconds to Impact ► “Rounds complete, over” – “Rounds complete, out.” “End of Mission.” Target neutralized: Something still may be alive. Target destroyed: Everything is dead. No effect: No effect on enemy. “Estimate ___ casualties, over” “End of mission. Target destroyed, estimate 16 casualties, over.”

“Alpha one six this is charlie one seven, fire for effect over.” BREAK “Location: ET123456, over” BREAK “Infantry platoon in the open, ICM in effect, over.” BREAK “Message to observer: Alpha, ICM in effect, 4 rounds, target number 001, out.” BREAK “Shot Out” “Splash Out” “Rounds Complete Out” “End of mission: Target destroyed, estimate 16 casualties, over.”
