4 STRATEGIC PLANNING DEFINED Strategic planning is a disciplined, creative, and collaborative process for determining how to take your association from where it is today to where you wish it to be in the future.

5 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES Purpose : To define a strategic plan that aligns our association – people, processes, and resources – with a clear, compelling, and desired future state. Results : Alignment on mission statement Clarity around association priorities A team focused on our associations' future Provide a basis for measuring performance

6 RULES OF ENGAGEMENT We need everyone’s participation. The desired mindset is one that is focused on the best interest of the association. Strategic versus tactical. “Parking lot” for out of scope issues. Biases exist. My role is as a facilitator. The decision will be made within the group.

9 NMBA MISSION “The National Mitigation Banking Association (NMBA) brings together leaders who are committed to a unique concept for restoring and conserving America’s wetlands, streams, habitats and other resources – a concept that unites sound economic and environmental practices.”

10 MISSION STATEMENT REVISITED Step 1: Storytelling (10 – 20) minutes What does it look like when we do our best work? Each person shares their story Capture the stories on index cards Circle every time you mention a specific place or a person. Draw a square around any mention of your association taking action. Underline something in the story that describes the results from your work.

12 MISSION STATEMENT REVISITED Step 3: Craft your Statement (5 to 10 minutes) Points to remember: Don’t worry about word choice. Keep it short. Keep it simple. Say it our loud. Write it on a flip chart. Share it with the group.

13 MISSION STATEMENT REVISITED Step 4: Finalizing the Mission Statement We’ll use the Contributive decision making model Identify a decider Tomorrow Morning Be prepared to share what you learned from each team. Share the mission statement.

Where do we have fewer resources than others? OpportunitiesThreats What good opportunities are open to you? If there were no constraints, what could you do? How can we turn our strengths into opportunities? Where do you want to be in five years? What obstacles do we face? What threats do our weaknesses expose us to?
