3 The Castes System and Mohandas Gandhi 1.What are castes? Castes are social groups that are ranked from highest to lowest. 2. What were the four castes of ancient India? Brahmans, or priests, warriors, merchants and farmers, and servants 3. What do Hindus believe happens to them when they die? Hindus believe that a person is born again after death. Depending on the way the person lived, rebirth may return the person into higher or lower caste or as an animal. 4. What is an untouchable? Below the Caste system was a group called “untouchables.” For centuries untouchables were forced to live apart, avoided by other Hindus. They were not even allowed to draw water from a village well. The untouchables did the jobs that no caste members would do, such as cleaning streets and collecting garbage.

4 The Castes System and Mohandas Gandhi 5. In what ways does the caste system determine people’s lives? Caste affects what people eat and where they live. When caste rules are strictly followed, people marry only someone from the same caste. Rarely do people leave the caste into which they were born. 6. Why do you think Gandhi referred to the untouchables as harijans (“children of God”)? They were human beings who did not deserve to be discriminated against. 7. What was Gandhi working towards achieving? Gandhi worked to achieve brotherhood and equality for all men and women. 8. What did Gandhi believe about nonviolence? Gandhi believed that nonviolence was mightier than weapons.

5 What was the impact of Gandhi’s peaceful, nonviolent teachings worldwide? 1.Other than India what other country had Gandhi used nonviolent teachings to help the lives of others? South Africa 2. Why would Gandhi encourage Indians to boycott the British and everything related to England? Mohandas Gandhi toured the Indian countryside, observing local cultures and living conditions; he concluded that the country’s intelligentsia had lost touch with its masses. 3. When Gandhi was put in jail, why did his popularity soar? In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Gandhi continued to rally the Indian masses for change, championing the disadvantaged, appealing for national unity, and speaking of lofty ideals. 4. Name a famous leader who also fought for equal rights. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

6 What was the impact of Gandhi’s peaceful, nonviolent teachings worldwide? 5. What are the Black Acts? The Black Acts gave the colonial authorities powers to suppress any revolutionary action by arresting political activists without a warrant. 6. Why did Gandhi go to Bengal? He was attempting to end violence there. 7. From what you know about Gandhi, If you were living during his time, would you have fought along side him or would you have sat back and watched, doing nothing? Why? Japan after World War II 1. What was the United States goal in Japan? To help rebuild their economy and prevent the spread of communism
