3 Land of Memories Park Given to the Mahkato Dakota tribe Named it “Dakota Wokiksuye Makoce Park,” which means “Land of Memories Park.” Founded in 1980

4 Wacipi Pow-wow Park was given to the tribe primarily as a place for the Wacipi Pow-wow. The pow-wow was first held in 1972 in Key City Park. Moved to Sibley Park in 1974.

5 Wacipi Pow-wow Moved permanently to Land of Memories Park in 1980 A sign of the Dakota and white man coming together after the Dakota Massacre.

6 Wacipi Pow-wow The Dakota put the park where it is today because they held many ceremonies and gatherings there before the 1862 massacre. The annual pow-wow is held every September to honor the 38 victims of the largest mass execution in U.S. history. It is a 3- day event, starting Friday night.

7 The Memorial Relay Run The Memorial Relay Run started in 1986. It is a relay run that starts at Ft. Snelling in Minneapolis and ends at the Land of Memories Park. It is also held in honor of the massacre, and the pow-wow follows the race.

8 Details about the campground 47 camping sites total Sites with electricity are available for $13/day, ones without electricity (tent sites) are available for $11/day.

11 More Details of the Campground There are many open fields for soccer and other sports, too.

12 Beautiful Scenery There is also a place to access the Minnesota River, in case you want to go fishing or swimming.
