6 Geography and Climate of the Midwest  The Midwest has many lakes, rivers, forest, fields and hills.  The northern states of the Midwest are bordered by Canada.  The weather in all of the Midwestern states is cold and snowy in the winter and hot and humid in the summer.

7 The Great Lakes  The Great Lakes are located in the Midwest and the East.  Many people visit the Great Lakes to go fishing, swimming and sailing. 8 North and South Dakota  Very few people live in North and South Dakota.  The states are known for their flat plains and also the Black Hills.  A long time ago buffalo roamed the plains of North and South Dakota.

9 North and South Dakota  Two famous tourist sites located in the Black Hills of South Dakota are Mount Rushmore and the monument to the American Indian Chief Crazy Horse.  Mount Rushmore is a monument to former U.S. presidents.  The monument to Crazy Horse is not complete. In 1948 workers began building the monument.

10 Nebraska and Iowa  Many fields and farms are located in Iowa and Nebraska.  Iowa is one of the world’s most productive farming regions. Iowa produces more corn, soybeans, hogs and eggs than all other states in the U.S.  Before white people arrived, American Indians in Nebraska hunted buffalo and grew corn, pumpkins, beans and squash.

11 Missouri and Kansas  Missouri and Kansas also have many farms and cattle, hogs and poultry are raised there.  St. (Saint) Louis is a large city in Missouri. The Gateway Arch is the tallest of all monuments in the U.S.  Kansas grows more wheat than any other U.S. state. Thunderstorms with lightening and sometimes tornados are common in Kansas.  Missouri and Kansas also have many farms and cattle, hogs and poultry are raised there.  St. (Saint) Louis is a large city in Missouri. 13 Wisconsin There are many breweries located in the largest city, Milwaukee.  The dairy industry is an important part of Wisconsin’s economy. Wisconsin produces a lot of cheese, milk and butter.  Northern Wisconsin is sparsely populated but has many forests and produces paper.  Appleton, WI is Kurgan’s sister city. It has very similar weather.

14 Illinois and Indiana  Chicago is the largest city in the Midwest and it is located in Illinois. The rest of Illinois is mostly rural.  Basketball is a very popular sport in Indiana.  The Indy 500 auto race takes place in the Motor Speedway racetrack located in the city of Indianapolis.

15 Michigan and Ohio  Michigan consists of two large peninsulas that border four of the five Great Lakes. The Mackinac Bridge connects the two peninsulas. Detroit is the largest city and was once the center of the U.S. auto industry.  Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron and is a popular tourist destination.  Ohio was a center of manufacturing in the 20th century.
