15 college-optometrists.org/students students@college-optometrists.org Plan for assessments carefully and thoroughly using the Trainee handbook and College website Be organised – get your records prepared and practise excellent record keeping Rehearse performing procedures and discussing your records with your supervisor and colleagues Don’t shy away from more challenging cases – be proactive to gain the breadth of experience required (e.g. RGP lenses) Continue revising theory using university notes/textbooks Set up a productive working relationship with your supervisor and assessor Be reflective about your practice – heed and act on constructive feedback Refract and dispense little and often Organise your HES early on STAGE 1 – TOP TIPS TO SUCCESS

Single assessment Summative Assesses the overarching groups of competence e.g. BV as a group, Dispensing as a group. Routine and Soft CL fitting/aftercare / Case-based discussion Lasts between 3 – 4 hours New assessor (each time) Mystery patients Can resit (if required) Receive constructive feedback (if unsuccessful)

22 college-optometrists.org/students students@college-optometrists.org Objective Structured Clinical Examination Minimises examiner bias Same assessment experience for everyone Tests important practical/clinical skills Performed in test conditions - Allows us to test a range of practical skills in an objective and fair way - Allows 16 different pairs of eyes to assess you – the more eyes, the better the assessment - Allows us to perform a final sample of competencies from across the WBA - Recognised as an effective and reliable assessment method especially when used in conjunction with other forms of assessment (i.e. WBA) OSCE – WHY USE THIS FORMAT?

29 college-optometrists.org/students students@college-optometrists.org 42% of candidates in the cohort didn’t needed any additional visits/resits at any stage of the Scheme (resit at Stage 1 = visit 5) 29% of trainees in this cohort only needed one resit at Stage 2, with no other resits or additional visits, to complete the Scheme successfully 82% of trainees passed the OSCE first time 89% candidates who needed an extra Stage 1 visit were not deemed to be struggling (needing more than one resit) at Stage 2 or OSCE Only 1 candidate out of 593 analysed needed an additional visit at Stage 1 and more than two additional resits at Stage 2/OSCE It is possible Statistics from analysis of 593 trainees who enrolled between 1 June 2013 and 31 st May 2014 REASSUROING STATS
