2. Read alouds  When you read aloud to your students, ask the Spanish speakers to raise their hands when they think they hear a cognate.  Stop reading and discuss that cognate  Point out the differences  Ask students to find three or four cognates and write on sticky pads

3. Follow up activities  Word sort: Pair students and give each pair a set of cognate cards: one card has English cognate and the other has the Spanish cognate. Example: family familia center centro radio radio class clase desert desierto magic magia gorilla gorila

4. Cognate Strategies Cont.  Circle Differences: Indicate which letters are different between the cognates: circle the letters.  False Cognates: Write examples of false cognates. Ex. Embarassed/embarazada pie/pie The words look alike, but do not have the same meaning!
