6 VIDEO-Reading Thermometers-CyberSquad 1. How was the CyberSquad's thermometer labeled? How many cyber degrees were represented by each mark? 2. The first temperature reading inside the case showed a temperature somewhere between the 40 and 50 cyber degree marks. How did the CyberSquad determine the exact temperature? 3. There are 5 spaces between 40 and 50 degrees. How many degrees are represented by each tick mark? 4. At the end of the video segment, the liquid inside the thermometer did not reach the mark on the thermometer. How did the CyberSquad determine the temperature? 5. Can you name other measuring tools that are marked like a thermometer? http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/wnet08_vid_wnettemp1/

7 HISTORY-THERMOMETERS Before there was the thermometer, there was the earlier and closely related thermoscope, best described as a thermometer without a scale. A thermoscope only showed the differences in temperatures, for example, it could show something was getting hotter. However, the thermoscope did not measure all the data that a thermometer could, for example an exact temperature in degrees. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWJHNG5y5F0

8 READING THERMOMETERS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb3tH9kx7PY Temperature is measured using two different scales: Celsius and Fahrenheit. Almost all the countries of the world use the Celsius scale. The United States is one of the only countries that use the Fahrenheit scale.

9 READING THERMOMETERS READ/COMPLETE “MEASURING TEMPERATURE: A THERMOMETER”, PP. 16-17
