Temperature

Temperature is measured using a thermometer. In the United States, we measure temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

In most of the rest of the world, temperature is measured in degrees Celsius.

We will start by learning about Fahrenheit, since that is what we use in this country.

Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Do you think it gets that hot in the summertime? If so, what would happen to the water in pools if the temperature reached 212 degrees?

On a hot day, it’s about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. What types of activities could you do on a day like this?

The classroom we’re in is about 68 degrees Fahrenheit. This is called “room temperature”, because it’s a comfortable temperature for inside a room.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. What type of activities would you do on a day when water is frozen?

Some thermometers show degrees Fahrenheit AND degrees Celsius.

Look at the top of my thermometer. Fahrenheit is on the left side and Celsius is on the left. At the top on the left you see 212 degrees Fahrenheit. If you move your finger over to the Celsius side, you will see that 212 degrees Fahrenheit is the same as 100 degrees Celsius. Now look at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If you move your finger to the Celsius side, your finger is close to the number 50. So, 120 degrees Fahrenheit is about 50 degrees Celsius.

Now let’s move from Celsius to Fahrenheit. If you put your finger on 10 degrees Celsius and move it over, your finger is right by 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Now it’s your turn to try some…
