Find My Rule YESNO Copper forms green copper carbonate when in contact with moist air Copper is reddish brown Copper forms new substances when combined with nitric acid and sulfuric acid Copper is easily shaped into sheets and drawn into wire Copper forms deep-blue solution when in contact with ammonia Copper has a density of 8.92 g/cm 3 Testers: iron is more dense than aluminum, gasoline is flammable, sodium ignites when dropped in water, oil and water do not mix, silver tarnishes

Physical and Chemical Properties

Learning Objective Distinguish between physical and chemical properties.

Properties of Matter A property is a distinguishing characteristic of a substance that is used in its identification and description. Each substance has a unique set of properties that distinguish it from all other substances. Two general types: – Physical – Chemical

Physical Property A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity (composition) of the substance. Evident without altering the substance chemically

Physical Property color odor physical state (solid, liquid, gas) melting point & boiling point hardness density solubility size shape etc.

Extensive and Intensive Properties Physical properties can be further described as one of two types: – Extensive – dependent on amount of substance present (mass, length, volume) – Intensive – independent of amount of substance present (density, temperature, hardness)

Chemical Property A chemical property is… the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances or the ability to resist change to form a new substance. Evident when an attempt to alter the substance is made.

Chemical Property Forming rust Decomposition Resistance to rust or decomposition Flammability Combustibility Forming gas (fizzing)
