2 Ready to submit?  First, send it out for review among your colleagues. 1. Members of your lab 2. All authors (OF COURSE) 3. To a colleague outside of your direct field 4. An expert in English

3 Get feedback! Ask colleagues what is clear/confusing Ask people outside your lab Did my introduction make sense?

4 Ready? How do I do it? Look at the Instructions for authors Submission instructions (website)  What to include  Who to send it to  If hard copies are required, how many copies, etc.

5 How to submit? Journals require 1) electronic versions as well as hard copies that must be sent by mail OR 2) electronic submission only – online Check the instructions to authors

6 What to include USE A CHECKLIST  Cover letter  Hard copy  Electronic copy  Signatures from all authors  Address, email, phone number, and fax for corresponding author

9 Final copy: Title page 1)Include title and authors 2)Running title (shorter version with a limited number of characters) 3)Include contact information for the corresponding author 4)Include affiliation and addresses for each author

10 Final copy: Abstract  Include list of key words (3 to 10) Example key words: malaria, PCR, drug resistance, chloroquine, sulfadoxine, pyrimethamine.

11 Final copy: Figures –Each on its own separate page –Do not include the figure title or legend on that page –Just label the figure by its #, for example “Figure 1” –Put the figure legends together on their own separate page –Check size of figure

12 Final copy: Tables  Each table on its own separate page  In footnote, explain all abbreviations  Check size of table  Table heading included above the table

13 Final copy: Text u Check margins and spacing u Use spell-check u Figure out your total words -“Word count” in Microsoft Word u Check your references -Do the references in the text match the reference list?

14 "The cover letter" Muy importante!  Helps orient the reader  States your main point and why it is important  States that the work is novel and not published elsewhere  Says who will be the corresponding author Ref: K. LaMarco & R. Ward

15 Cover letter: Details 1.Identify the journal name 2.Suggested reviewers 3.Maybe--List of competing scientists you do not want to have as reviewers

16 Which editor?  Often there are various editors for a journal –You can send it to an editor that you know is familiar with your work or field of work.

17 Go over the checklist  Go over the checklist one last time –Look at the example of instructions to authors in the binder  Send it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
