Students write sentences. Students write sentences that show ideas. Students write sentences that show how, when, where, what and why by using strong language. Students, who are good writers, compose quality sentences with vivid and interesting language that show ideas by describing who, what, when, where, why, and how about the subject. Writing Good

 Make sure you are being specific for your reader. The reader should be able to see the picture you “paint”  Try to substitute more interesting words if needed.  Use different types of sentences, as well as different size sentences in your writing.  Read your sentences out loud to yourself to see if the sentence makes senses.

Building Excellent Sentences Start with the two parts you need to write a sentence the subject and predicate. The boy ran. “Paint” the predicate by adding how, when, where, what and/or why it happened The boy ran quickly to school to avoid being late when he missed the bus this morning. Be specific with your subject tell what kind, which ones, how many with adjectives and appositives. To avoid being late this morning, the nervous boy, a new student, ran quickly to school when he missed the bus. Move the predicate “painters” if you think there is too much. To avoid being late this morning, the boy ran quickly when he missed the bus.

 If you have more than person or place, thing, or idea you are writing about use compound subjects to eliminate unnecessary sentences. I like to eat pizza. My friend likes to eat pizza too. My friend and I like to eat pizza.  If you subject/s have more than verb, use compound predicates to eliminate unnecessary sentences. My mom enjoys cooking. She also likes to sew. She loves to paint. My mom enjoys cooking, sewing, and painting.  Make compound sentences if sentences have things in common or when opposites. We are studying for our test. I hope we get good grades. We want to get good grades, so we are going to study. I love chocolate cake. I hate chocolate ice cream. I hate chocolate ice cream, but I love chocolate cake.

 Clauses and phrases and attention words at the beginning of the sentence can help “jazz up a sentence” by helping to show when, where, why, how, and to what extent Knowing I had the correct answers, I was confident I was going to get an A. During the play, ___________________________. In order to win the game, __________________. Exhausted and bleeding, ___________________. Suddenly,______________________________

Take the subjects and predicates we used at the beginning of the lesson and try to create excellent sentences by “painting” your sentences with the suggestions in this lesson. “ Paint” the predicate by adding how, when, where, what and/or why it happened Be specific with your subject tell what kind, which ones, how many with adjectives and appositives. Use clauses, phrases, and attention words at the beginning of the sentence can help “jazz up a sentence” by helping to show when, where, why, how, and to what extent.
