The sharing economy: a typology and potential policy concerns Ana-Maria Suciu

Objective: an attempt to operationalize the concept of sharing economy in order to identify the main dimensions that matter for policy and to create categories that would further help develop research questions and hypothesis.

Looking at definitions The “ideal-type” kind Botsman, OuiShare, People who Share Value-driven definitions Values: empowerment, transparency, authenticity, communities The “real world” kind Felländer, Ingram, Teigland ; PWC; Fraiberger, Sundararajan; Measurable dimensions disruption: reduced transaction costs

Key elements the type of assets - underutilized assets, idle capacity – both goods and services. the nature of the market: peer to peer or business to customer; market-based trade between private individuals; decentralized exchange. reduced transaction costs for users by replacing third- party intermediaries with digital platforms; disruptive technology; sharing the knowledge of goods and services to better exchange them for profit vs. non profit mechanisms of self-governance, horizontal networks and participation of a community.

Access over ownership? My operational definition : peer-to-peer sharing of goods, money or labour, transactioned through online platforms that allow easy participation of large networks. The terms of difference: type of assets shared in terms of capital or labour and the income generating function of the sharing activity. Labour vs. capital: the return on capital remains higher than the return on labour, thus the “sharing economy” reproduces the capitalist outcomes in new ways
