Skeletal system Identify functions of the skeleton Explain the role that joints play Describe the characteristics of bone

Skeleton  Made up of all the bones in your body  Your skeleton is your framework

Bellwork 9/13/10  What is your skeletal system?  What is the function of your skeletal system?  What are the organs of your skeletal system?

Skeletal system  What does it do?  Provides shape and support  Enables us to move  Protects our organs  Produces blood cells  Stores minerals and other materials

Shape and support  Skeleton-determines the shape of your body  Backbone-the center of the skeleton  Vertebrae-small bones of the back

Movement and protection  Your skeleton allows you to move  Most of the bones are associated with muscle  The muscle pull on the bones to make the body move  Bones also protect organs  Skull protects your brain

Production/storage  Some bones produce substances that your body needs (blood cells)  Bones also store minerals (calcium)

Joints  A joint is a place in the body where two bones come together  Joints allow bones to move in different ways  Two kinds of joints  Immovable  Movable

Immovable joints  Connect bones in a way that allows little or no movement  Example is the bones of the skull

Movable joints  Most are movable  Ligaments are connective tissue that hold the bones in movable joints  Joints may also have cartilage which is more flexible than bones

Activity  Perform these activities and determine which type of joints is involved  Move your arm in a circle  Push open a door  Lift a book from a desk  Kneel down  Wave your hand  Twist your head from side to side Joints are on page 14

Bones  Bones are complex living structures that undergo growth and development  Bones are strong and living

Bone structure  Compact bone- beneath the bone’s outer membrane  Spongy bone- inside of the compact bone, has many small spaces within it  Marrow- soft connective tissue, found in the spaces of bone  Red marrow-produces blood cells  Yellow marrow-stores fat

Bone strength  Structure of bone makes it strong and lightweight.  Stronger than rocks and concrete

Bone growth  ITS ALIVE!  Bones are alive with cells and tissue  Bones form new tissue as you grow

Bone development  Move the tip of your nose from side to side with your finger  Contains cartilage  Over time most of the cartilage is replaced with hard bone tissue  Is complete by the end of growth  Many joints always contain cartilage

Bone care  Balanced diet  Regular exercise

Diet  Eat a well balanced diet to promote healthy bones  Be sure and get plenty of calcium and phosphorus  Where does calcium and phosphorus come from in our diet?

Exercise  Builds and maintains strong bones  Running, skating, dancing

Osteoporosis  People become old their bones begin to lose some minerals  Mineral loss leads to osteoporosis in which the body’s bones become weak and break easily  Regular exercise can prevent it along with a good diet  More common in women
