Unit and Lesson Planning Objectives 1.Understand how to write SLO’s (student learning objectives). 2.Align SLOs with RI GSE in Science and Next Generation in Science and rubrics. 3.Understand instructional sequence for science, writing, and pre-assessment lessons.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there. – Lewis Carroll

Backwards Design Approach First, plan with the end in mind. Three Stages of Planning – Desired Results – Acceptable Evidence (Assessments) – Planned Learning Experiences

What is an “SLO?” SLO’s (student learning objectives) – observable, measurable objectives that students achieve and teachers can assess. Why? – Builds a stronger sense of purpose – essential for effective instruction and assessment

How many “SLOs to assess” should you create? Create three Unit SLOs – one for each of the three key elements. Align with standards. – Science content * – Scientific thinking ** – science skill ** * RIGSE in Science; NGSS Disciplinary Concepts ** RIGSE in Science; NGSS S&E Practices

How do I create an SLO? Step 1. Identify big ideas. Big ideas are major concepts and generalizations. Resources – FOSS Module Summaries FOSS Module Summaries – STC Learning Framework STC Learning Framework – RI Grade Span Expectations in Science RI Grade Span Expectations in Science – Next Generation Science Standards Next Generation Science Standards

Scientific Thinking and Science Skills Next Generation Science Standards

RI GSE in Science for Gr 2 Air & Weather Domain Statement of Enduring Knowledge Assessment Targets RI Grade Span Expectations in Science

RI GSE in Science RI GSE in Science for Gr 1 STC Organisms Domain Statement of Enduring Knowledge Assessment Targets RI Grade Span Expectations in Science

How do I create an SLO? Step 2. Use this form to devise the SLO. Students will be able to [verb related to Bloom’s cognitive process] [concept, skill] by (target criteria - observable behaviors/performance, qualities of product).

Gr 4 Earth Materials Example Student Learning Objective (SLO) Students will be able to understand properties of earth materials by describing, comparing, and sorting rocks, soils, and minerals by similar or different physical properties (e.g., size, shape, color, texture, smell, weight). Bloom’s Verb Concept Assessment Target

Gr 4 FOSS Earth Materials Example SLO Aligned with RI GSE in Science SLO 1 The student will be able to understand properties of earth materials by describing, comparing, and sorting rocks, soils, and minerals by similar or different physical properties (e.g., size, shape, color, texture, smell, weight). 14 Now It’s Your Turn! 1.Download “SLO Task” file. Go to Bb Class Meetings > Science Unit and Lesson Planning 2.Task: Compose three SLOs for your unit. 3.Align with RIGSE in Science and NGSS. 4.Upload completed file to me in File Exchange. 5.Continue unit and lesson planning with your team.
