2  Roman religion was a blending of Latin, Greek and Etruscan influences.  They adopted a pantheon of deities, six gods and six goddesses who directed the affairs of the world with their superhuman powers.  Some had close associations with the Greek Olympians, though many also shared characteristics with early Latin and Etruscan deities.

3  Many planets in our solar system were named after Roman gods.  Other names have become part of our language in another form. Vulcan made thunderbolts under Mount Etna, today we call fiery and explosive mountains volcanoes

17  In addition to the 12 principal gods, the Romans believed in a number of minor deities and in a spirit world.  Spirits were everywhere – in fire, water, stones and trees.  Spirits also watched over everyday activities such as planting seeds and baking bread.

18  The success and happiness of a family depended on the goodwill of various household spirits.  People regularly made sacrifices and performed rituals to appease these supernatural beings.
