2 History  Taylor Street.  Small amounts of Italians started arriving in the Chicago area in the 1850s.  Mass European migration near the start of the 20th century  By 1880 there were 1,357 Italians. 3 Fun Facts & Points of Interest  The University of Illinois at Chicago is a major part of Little Italy; with over 25,000 students enrolled at the university, it is one of the largest in Chicago  The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, founded in 1977, is “dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Italian Americans in sports.”  Another landmark in the area is the Our Lady of Pompeii Church, a community center and shrine to Mary.  -Provides a refuge for prayer and education.  Arrigo Park, main attraction is a large sculpture of Christopher Columbus. http://www.ourladyofpompeii.org/sites/ourladyofpompeii.org/files/2015%20easter%20church.jpg

9 Directions  Location of Little Italy- on the north side of the neighborhood is the Eisenhower Expressway, and on the east side is the Kennedy Expressway, the south side of the neighborhood is by Roosevelt Road and the west is by Polk Street  Little Italy is also by the United Center  Ways to get to Little Italy via public transport-  L- walk and get on the red line, then transfer to the pink line  Or  Redline to Jackson and then transfer to the Blue line at Jackson and get off at the UIC stop at Halsted and walk to Little Italy  Bus- get on the 147 and then transfer to the 60
