Community Service Ashley Berry Fall 2005- Spring 2006

I Volunteered For… Victory for Victoria Adopt-A-Child for Christmas Crestwood Nursing Center

Victoria for Victoria Victory for Victoria was a race I ran in to support a child that was badly ill. I ran a mile and was completely worn out. It was very moving to be running with so many people that were supporting the same cause.

Adopt-A-Child for Christmas For Christmas, I bought a present for a child that is less fortunate. I bought her markers and paper to color on.

Crestwood Nursing Center I volunteered at Crestwood Nursing Center every Tuesday for a month. I would stay there two hours at a time. I stayed in the Alzheimer’s unit. I would do puzzles and color with the elderly. I would also pass out snacks. I really got to know some of them and will miss seeing them.

Hope after Tragedy… Daniel Johnson was a resident at the nursing home that I interacted with. He was there due to an accident that left him unable to eat, speak, or walk on his own. The first day I volunteered there was the last day he would have to stay there. He made a remarkable recovery and was transferred to Shepherd’s Center in Atlanta, which specializes in head trauma rehabilitation.

My Reaction… Volunteering made me feel good, because I got the chance to help people. Victory for Victoria had a read impact on me. It was really emotionally moving to be at the race that was held for her. Running alongside all of the people that cared for that girl so much and seeing her family there really touched me. As for the Adopt-A-Child, it was nice to give a present to a less fortunate child. I felt like I was able to help her out by giving her a present. And with many more people giving her presents, maybe she had a “normal” Christmas and got what she asked for. Lastly, volunteering at Crestwood Nursing Center was good for me, and for the residents. However, it was also depressing. For example, I witnessed a visitor talking to her mom, and her mom didn’t even respond. I think I would go crazy knowing that my mom has no knowledge of who I am- her daughter. I hope I never get Alzheimer’s disease, it is horrible, and would hurt my family more than anything.
