1 “Civil Disobedience” Objective: To annotate a text by first reading and marking anything that you notice; then identifying the purpose/tone/audience in a thesis statement; then annotating for specific effects to answer AP style questions and writing prompts

2 Quickwrite There have been several protests and activist marches in the last few months. Do you think they were effective for creating change? Explain why or why not.

3 Biography While we study various authors, we will be looking at how their lives and times they lived in influenced their style of writing. Read the short biography of Thoreau

4 Reading and Annotating On the first reading, I am looking for the main message of the passage and the author’s tone. (Tone can affect the message—miss the tone and you could done miss the message) Ask a question for clarification or vocabulary Rhetorical Techniques to “spy” or look for – Anecdotes – Imagery – Definitions – Dividing whole into parts – Paradoxes – Metaphors – Irony – Evidence

5 Discuss Look for three lines you would like to discuss with your group from the selection you have chosen Person 1—lines 1-34 Person 2—lines 35-76 Person 3—lines 77-114 – Interesting ideas (agree/disagree with point) – Places of confusion – Vivid imagery, diction, or comparisons

6 SOAPSTone Speaker: – How does Thoreau urge his readers to believe in him as a trustworthy, credible person? Occasion: – What is the central questions that the text has been written in response to? Audience: – How do you think Thoreau wanted his readers to react to the essay? What did he want them to feel? Think? Believe? Do? Would different audiences react differently? Purpose: – What is Thoreau’s message or purpose? What does he want changed? Subject: – What is his REAL topic? Tone: – What is his attitude towards the topic or audience? What diction or imagery creates this tone? Thesis statement with the following: (TAG) purpose and tone about the subject/audience

7 Guided Analysis Answer the following 8 questions by: – Answering the prompt Topic sentence – Citing text and (line #) Introduce by stating where in the text and any rhetorical techniques that were used – Explaining the effects Connect to the effect SOAPSTone Connect to Ethos/Pathos/Logos (don’t use these terms but describe how the citation creates this element of argument)

8 Writing Prompt The excerpt for Civil Disobedience written by naturalist and activist Henry David Thoreau voices his opinion about government taxes being used for the Mexican-American War. Reread the passage carefully. Then write an essay in which you analyze how Thoreau illustrates choice to not pay taxes.
