Teks TEKS 112.14, Science, Grade 3, beginning with School Year 2010- 2011 (B) Knowledge and Skills (10) Organisms and environments. The student knows that organisms undergo similar life processes and have structures that help them to survive within their environments. The student is expected to: (C) investigate and compare how animals and plants undergo a series of orderly changes in their diverse live cycles such as tomato plants, frogs, and ladybugs.

Objectives The student will observe and record the life cycle of a ladybug using a journal, colored pencils and a magnify glass with 100% accuracy. The student will accurately identify the anatomy of a ladybug The student will demonstrate understanding of the habitat of a ladybug The student will understand why ladybugs have spots.

Egg Stage The female ladybug lays cluster of tiny eggs in leaves. The eggs hatch in 3-5 days. Lay 10 to 15 eggs. http://youtu.be/SvHWxDjfFB8

Larva Stage - A ladybug larva hatches from an egg. It has 6 legs and a long body. It eats leaves and it molts (sheds its skin) many times as it grows. -This stage lasts 2 to 4 weeks -Look for food -Look like tiny alligators

Pupa Stage -After it grows enough, the larva attaches itself to a leaf and loses its old skin- it is then a pupa. -This stage lasts for 5 to 7 days. -Looks like if it is sleeping for a few days, but it is not at all. Getting ready for next stage.

Adult  The adult lady bug emerges from the pupa.  Skin splits open  In this stage the ladybug gets its hard shell  Also, the shell turns red

Ladybug’s Anatomy > Eight body parts are the head, antenna, eyes, pronotum, thorax, elytra, wings, and legs. > Antenna is what helps a ladybug smell, taste, and feel its way around two eyes but it doesn’t see very well pronotum is the part right behind >The ladybug’s flat head that sort of makes the head look round thorax and the abdomen, is the body section that the legs and wings are attached to.

Habitat -Ladybug’s habitat can be just about anywhere. - Ladybugs like temperatures to be in the 60 to 85 degree range -They hibernate in the winter, either under logs and piles of leaves or in people’s houses. -Ladybugs are considered to be beneficial insects because they can help backyard gardeners and farmers with pest control. Ladybugs live on plants so when leaves tumble to the ground, so do ladybugs.

Ladybug Spots -Red spots -Black spots -Taste bad to predators -Ladybugs taste poisonous to predators

Raising Ladybugs -Ladybug Farm -Easier to watch life cycle - Science teachers

Ladybug activities -Different math activities -Read, “The Grouchy Ladybug” -Find cutouts to match the anatomy of the Ladybug to body -Take the class outside to look for ladybugs on leaves
