8.3: INTERPRET A REMAINDER TO FIND A REASONABLE ANSWER After their soccer game, the coach had 43 pieces of candy. He put the candy in four equal groups to share with his players. He ate the pieces that were left over. How many pieces of candy did he eat? 3 Because: He would give his players 40 pieces of candy ( 4 x 10 = 40), the 3 remainders would be what the coach ate.

8.3: INTERPRET A REMAINDER TO FIND A REASONABLE ANSWER In the bookroom, Cindy needs to place exactly five books on each shelf. She has 68 books. How many shelves can she fill? 13 Because: She could fill 13 shelves with 60 (5 x 13 = 60), books and the other 3 would be on their own shelf, but it would not be filled.

8.3: INTERPRET A REMAINDER TO FIND A REASONABLE ANSWER Marc wants to put his 54 baseball cards in a book. Each page holds 4 cards. How many pages will he need? 14 Because: He would fill 13 pages with 52 cards, he would need another page to hold the 2 remaining cards. So 13 + 1 more is 14 pages total are needed.
