2 Why Labeling? New food labels tell us a lot about food. -Don’t make a decision for you, but allow you to make an informed choice. Everyone needs to make healthy informed decisions, especially teenagers. WHY? Teens are still growing, but their “on-the-run” lifestyles prevent them from getting the right amount of nutrients and calories.

3 Effects of a Poor Diet: Short Term: Anemia- common in teenage girls, caused by a lack of iron, paleness and tired feeling Long Term: Heart disease, Obesity, Cancer: too much fat in the diet and not enough fiber Osteoperosis: not enough calcium in the diet, can cause a humpback appearance and brittle bones.

5 With Today’s Labels… You can… Compare foods, choose foods that provide adequete nutrients, plan moderate, varied and balanced meals.

6 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 Label features: New title, listing of nutrients and recommendations, serving sizes based on household sizes, reference value compared to a 2000 calorie diet, info for calculating personal nutrient needs, informative ingredient list (in order from greatest to least), net weight, artificial coloring, flavor and preservatives, name/address of manufacturer, special info addressing health problems

7 Notes to know: Largest amount of ingredient is listed first Percent of Daily Value- based on 2000 calories a day Sodium intake-no more than 2400 mg/day Nutritional Facts required if claiming nutritional value.

8 New Requirements: Serving and portion sizes Calories from fat per serving % of Daily Value of fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs % of Vitamin A, C, calcium and iron Basis of values UPC- helps with inventory, speeds check out process
