5.  Salvador Allende, Unidad Popular, a coalition of the Socialist Party and the Communist Party.  The US knew that Allende’s victory would give Cuba an ally, thus changing the balance of power in the Americas  Allende won with 36% of the vote in a democratic election  A military plot to overthrow Allende was abandoned when the army commander-in- chief was killed when being abducted by the CIA and right wing groups

6.  A short economic boom was followed by major financial problems  New investments and foreign exchange grew scarce and there were many shortages  President Nixon damaged the Chilean economy by blocking loans and other financial aid from multilateral organizations

10.  Thousands of perceived enemies of the state were imprisoned and thousands more were murdered  The Chilean National Stadium was used as a prison camp and torture center  20,000 Chileans went in to exile and many people lived in fear of being raped, murdered or tortured  Though some saw him as a positive force for Chile

11.  Allende’s ambassador to the United States who was an economist and political figure  As a refugee from Pinochet’s dictatorship, he accepted several academic position in Washington DC after fleeing Chile  He was assassinated by Pinochet’s agents in 1976 after his car was bombed
