The Shores Mission Statement To provide a safe, nurturing and loving environment for our clients to heal from addiction. We will treat all phases of the disease using the most current medical, physiological, psychological holistic and spiritual approaches available to a team of licensed and board certified professionals.

The Shores Philosophy Is based upon the theory that addiction to alcohol and other substances is a multi-fold disease: physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological. We believe that the recovery of every aspect of the affected persons’ lives, as well as the lives of their loved ones. We also realize that healing can be a very difficult and painful process-much the same as recovery from any other illness.

The Tools to Fight Addiction The twelve steps and beyond…

The AA Tools of Recovery Abstinence The 12 Steps Meetings 90 in 90 Sponsor Chips Telephone Slogans Service Big Book Anonymity Daily Inventory Higher Power Identify Triggers

History of AA Bill W. and Dr. Bob are the original co-founders of AA. June 10 th 1935 Is the birthday of the organization. This is the date of Dr. Bob’s last drink. The two men understood that in order for sobriety to work an Alcoholic needed another alcoholic and it would only happen “one day at a time”. The Big Book was first published in 1939. this is the handbook of AA and recovery. The first meetings were held with Bill W. leading them New York, and Dr. Bob leading them in Akron, Oh. In 1939 other cites began to hold Meetings. Today AA is worldwide. AA was founded on Christian principals, today It continues to be a spiritual program but not exclusive to only Christians. As of Jan. 2014 it is estimated that there are over 2,000,000 members of an active AA group.

Learning the Tools Telephone: This is the lifeline in recovery. Your loved one will learn that help is only a phone call away. Calling a sponsor on a daily basis in early recovery is key. Service: Giving back to the community of recovery will be encouraged. Anonymity: AA is a program that respects its members and understands the need for privacy. Only first names are used to protect the member. Higher Power: God or God as you see him, the idea that someone bigger then ourselves is our only hope of recovery. 90 in 90: people who’ keep coming back’ have a better rate of recovery. 90 meeting in 90 days is the philosophy of AA. Chips: counting days in recovery, celebrating millstones, chips mark days sober. 1,2,3,6,9 and 12 months chips are given then yearly. Big Book: the principals and traditions of the AA program.

Learning the Tools Daily Inventory: a personal daily evaluation of how recovery is going in your life. Identify Triggers: triggers are the threshold to relapse. They are what brings to life the connection of feelings, places, people or things and the cravings for one’s drug of choice.

Slogans as a Tool Slogans are catchy phrases that are easily remembered and can be used as reminders of the principals of recovery, for example: “First things first” a reminder to prioritize. Sobriety comes first “Easy does it” Don’t take take on too much early on. “H.A.L.T.” Don’t get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired. “Go to any lengths” your loved one went to great lengths to get high, they need to pursue recovery with the same intensity! “keep it simple” nothing too drastic, keep life simple.

The 12 Steps: Definition: the process of self-discovery. Best when worked on with a sponsor.

More Slogans “One day at a time” its overwhelming to think of never using again! The substance was their best friend. Instead focus on not using TODAY. “Progress not perfection” there will always be work to do on ourselves. Recovery is never finished, its ongoing. “Only as sick as our secrets” learning to be open and honest helps get rid of the toxic shame. “Surrender to win” the core of the program, its not admitting defeat its saying we are willing to try another way…ours wasn’t working fro us. “Let go and let God” leave our past in the past, move forward with the help of your Higher Power. “H.O.W.” Honesty, open minded, willingness. To try the program and follow the steps toward a new sober lifestyle.

The 12 Steps: Definition: a way of self discovery. Best worked through with a sponsor.  I can’t! Admitting powerlessness  God can Finding Hope  Let God Surrender  Look within Take inventory of self  Admit wrongs Confess  Ready self for change Become ready to change

The Steps: 7. Seek God’s help Ask God 8. Become willing Make a list of amends 9. Make Amends Make Amends 10. Daily Inventory Measure daily progress 11. Pray and Meditate Learn to be quiet 12. Give it Away Help others

Truths behind Recovery Summed Up: The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking as He did this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

Learning the Tools: Abstinence: We commit ourselves to stay away from our drug of choice, one day at a time. Meetings: We attend meetings to learn how the program works, to share our experiences, strength and hope with one another, and we learn through the support of a recovery community we are never alone. Sponsor: A sponsor in AA is someone who has completed the steps themselves, they have what we want and are living a continually sober lifestyle. They are some one to confide in
