Chapter 2 Designing and Planning Technology Enhanced Instruction By Tracy Theriault and Erika Davis

A Systems Approach to instruction 1. Design –The dynamic Instructional Design ModelThe dynamic Instructional Design Model 2. Plan 3. Act

The Dynamic Instructional Design Model Step 1: Know the learners Step 2: State Your objectives Step 3: Establish the learning environment Step 4: Identify teaching and learning strategiesStep 4: Identify teaching and learning strategies Step 5: Identify and select technologies Step 6: Plan a summative evaluation

Know the Learners Developmental stages? Cultural and language backgrounds? What do they already know? How do they learn? Similarities and differences? –How do you accommodate your design for these differences?

State Your Objectives What do you want to accomplish? Stem …the student will be able to… Target Performance …the student will demonstrate… Measurement Conditions …method used to demonstrate… Criterion for Success …an assessment goal…

Establish the Learning Environment Physical Space Climate Lighting Comfort Organization –Group work –Individual space

Identify Teaching and Learning Strategies Teaching Strategies: the methods you use to assist your students in achieving the objectives. Learning strategies: techniques and activities that you will require your students to engage in to master the content.

Identify and Select Technologies Instructional Technologies are tools used to enhance and support the teaching and learning strategies planned by the teacher. Questions to consider: What technologies are available? What would be most appropriate according to what I want to accomplish?

Planning a Summative Evaluation How did you do… evaluate yourself! –Self-evaluation –Rubrics –Student Feedback How can you improve? Revise, Revise, Revise

Lesson Planning using the DID Model The DID model helps you to see the instructional big picture, while the lesson plan is a day-to-day snap shot of the classroom. -Readying the learners -Targeting specific objectives -Preparing the lesson Instructional Action Planning

Lessons to-do list: –Prepare classroom –Listing teaching-learning activities –Creating personal prompts –Listing support technologies –Planning a summative feedback –Detailing follow-up activities

So now you can ask yourself… How will I use a design model to integrate technology into my every day lessons?
