1 What do good readers do when they read? Let’s practice.

2 Predict/ Infer Think about the title. What have you read so far? What will happen next? What is the author saying but didn’t write?

3 When you come to a word you don’t know what do you do? Phonics/Decoding

4 Look carefully at the word. Look for parts you know. Think about the sounds for the letters.

5 Blend the sounds you know. p ean ut peanut

6 Is this a word I know? Does it make sense?

7 What else can I try?

8 Monitor/Clarify ? ? Does what I’m reading make Am I learning what I want to learn? ? sense?

9 If it doesn’t… Read it again. Read ahead Use the pictures.

10 Question Ask questions as you read or after you finish. ?

11 Evaluate How do I feel about what I read? Do I agree or disagree? Am I learning what I want to know?

12 Use your strategies to think about what you are reading. Read to make sense. Read to learn.

13 Summarize What is the main idea? What are the important parts? Tell in your own words what you read.
