Definitions: Mixed Number – Is a number that contains a whole number greater than one and a fraction. Terminating Decimals – Are decimals that end or “terminate”. For example, 3.67 and 4.192 are terminating decimals. Repeating Decimals – Are decimals that have a block of one or more digits that repeat without ending. For example, 0.666… or 0.4545… are repeating decimals.

Example 1: 0.23 0.23 23 100 Then put 23 over 100. This is the final answer. Say twenty-three hundredths Strategy: * Say the number verbally. * Write the number as a fraction. * Reduce, if necessary. ** Don’t forget about a whole number if there is one.** Writing Decimals as Fractions or Mixed Numbers Example 2: 0.375 0.375 Put 375 over 1000 Say three hundred and seventy five thousandths Reduce ÷ 25 Reduce ÷ 5 Final answer

Convert the following decimals as fractions. Reduce, if necessary. 1.) 0.362.) 0.2253.) 1.52

Common Fractions and Equivalent Decimals Fractions Decimals

Example 1: Write as a decimal. Multiply by 5 so that the denominator is 100. Strategy: * Write the fraction as an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. * Write the equivalent fraction as a decimal. ** Don’t forget about a whole number if there is one.** Writing Fractions as Decimals Option 1: When It’s Possible to Write Equivalent Fractions x 5

Example2: Final answer 5.6 Divide 2 by 3. Strategy: * Divide the numerator by the denominator using long division. * If necessary, add 0s to the dividend. * If the quotient repeats, add a bar over the repeating digits. ** Don’t forget about a whole number if there is one.** Writing Fractions as Decimals Option 2: When Equivalent Fractions Can’t Be Written

Convert the following fractions to decimals. 1.)2.) 3.)

Order the fractions and decimals from least to greatest. 1.) 0.5, 0.37, 2.), 0.8,
