Student Planner Place this in the proper place September 23, 2015 Notebook goes to the SLC tomorrow.. END OF PLANNER

2 End of planner Leave planner out for stamping after we finish yesterday’s notes

2 College Day Why a Marine Corps Shirt for College Day? 1.Marines offer free college education – on line and in class. 2.Marine training can provide you with technical training to get a career.

4 Summary of last class We had a standard opening, followed by the measuring lab. We worked on the prefixes of the metric system, then watched a video with Bill Nye. Next was a practice on measuring with a ruler.

5 Write your answer to last class’s Essential Question: Convert measurements to the proper prefixes.

Topic/Objective:Name: Scientific Measuring Class/Period: Date: Sept 23 Essential Question: Explain the importance of accurate measuring.

Homework Notebook should be taken to the SLC tomorrow, and return to use in class Friday.

Today’s Work  Use triple beam balance – lab measuring a stick  Complete ruler & line work  Importance of accuracy

15 Importance of Accuracy The importance of accurate and precise measurements in the physical sciences cannot be overstated. Often times, even minute errors can render data unusable. For this reason, scientists must learn to use measuring devices in a manner that results in maximum accuracy and precision. The two most common sources of error include measurement errors and experimental technique. One of the basic skills that all scientists must posses is the ability to take accurate and detailed measurements. The cornerstone of making proper measurements is based on the idea that scientists want to collect as much meaningful and accurate data as possible Accuracy definition - the condition or quality of being true, correct, or exact; freedom from error or defect; precision or exactness; correctness.

16 Importance of Accuracy Accuracy equates to true – the measurement is true, the test results are true, the action is true. Failure to be accurate can have devastating results – billions of $ lost (look at VW); damages; injuries; deaths. Science experiments with inaccuracies are not valuable (can be very expensive). We cannot tolerate inaccuracy in making medicines, programming computers, repairing planes, etc. Dedicate yourself to make accurate decisions now.

17  Follow along reading pg 24-27
