Changes in Matter Chapter 2.2 (continued) PPT NOTES Include drawing in science journal.

B. Conservation of Matter Law of Conservation of Matter: During chemical changes, matter is neither created nor destroyed. CH 4 + 2 O 2 → CO 2 + 2 H 2 O

Energy and Matter Chapter 2.3 PPT NOTES

Energy: the ability to do work or to change something. TPS: What do you need energy to do everyday? Energy is required to: Ride a bike Think Use an IPad

I. Forms of Energy A.Thermal Energy Temperature: A measure of the random motions of atoms and molecules in a substance. PHet Simulation (Does not work with IPad) Molecules in Motion (YouTube)

Thermal Energy: The total energy of all the particles in a substance. Most common. Endothermic Change: A change in matter where energy is absorbed. “endo” = inside, within Ex. Melting ice Energy

Exothermic Change: A change in matter where energy is released. “exo” = outside, outward Ex. Combustion Energy

TPS: Are the following changes in matter endothermic or exothermic? Fireworks exploding Melting ice cream Burning paper Evaporating water (liquid to gas) Water turning into ice Boiling water Endothermic Exothermic Exothermic

B. Chemical Energy: The energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold atoms together. ☼ When bonds are broken, the stored chemical energy is converted into thermal energy. Thermite

C. Electromagnetic energy: energy that travels through space in the form of waves. Also called radiation. Ex. Radio waves, visible light, x-rays.

D. Electrical Energy: the energy of electrically charged particles moving from one place to another.

II. Transforming Energy ☼ During chemical changes, chemical energy may be changed into other forms of energy and vice versa.

Ex. Burning match Chemical Energy → Thermal Energy Ex. Photosynthesis Electromagnetic Energy → Chemical Energy

Self-check 1. What are the 4 forms of energy related to changes in matter? Thermal, Chemical, Electromagnetic, Electrical

Self-check 2. What happens to chemical energy during a chemical change? Chemical energy is converted to other forms of energy.

Self-check 3. What are the 2 forms of energy released when paper burns? Thermal energy and electromagnetic energy.
