1 Thinking Like Pilgrims
Hebrews 11:13-16

2 What is thinking like pilgrims?
Seeking a homeland Homesteading verses sojourning The spiritual application What is thinking like pilgrims?

3 Seeking a homeland Hebrews 11: These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (14) For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. (15) And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. (16) But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

4 Homesteading verses sojourning

5 Spiritual thought This world is not my home I’m just a passing through
I’m pressing on the upper way Here we are but straying pilgrims I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide, just over in the glory land There is a habitation built by the Living God

6 Why we must think like pilgrims
Christ is to be our life Not to love the world No hope in this world Why we must think like pilgrims

7 Christ is to be our life Colossians 3:1-4 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. (2) Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. (3) For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (4) When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

8 Christ is to be our life Matthew 10: He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. (38) And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. (39) He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

9 We are not to love the world
1 John 2: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. (17) And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

10 We are not to love the world
James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

11 There is no hope in this world
1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

12 There is no hope in this world
Romans 8:5-6 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

13 How do we think like pilgrims?
Life is a test Life is a trust Life is temporary How do we think like pilgrims?

14 Life is a test 1 Peter 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

15 Life is a test 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. (10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

16 Life is a trust Job 1:21 And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD."

17 Life is a trust Parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30)

18 Life is temporary Psalms 39:4-6 "LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. (5) Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah (6) Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them.

19 The best is yet to come!!!

20 When you think like a pilgrim you will be transformed
Treasures in heaven A new perspective Courage to suffer Hope and confidence in death When you think like a pilgrim you will be transformed

21 You will lay up treasures in heaven
Matthew 6: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 You will lay up treasures in heaven
1 Timothy 6: Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. (18) Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, (19) storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

23 You will have a new perspective on the ups and downs of life
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

24 Courage to suffer and sacrifice
2 Corinthians 4: Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, (18) while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

25 Hope and confidence in death
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:5-6 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. (6) So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

26 Happily ever after is not found in this life

27 Are you a pilgrim or a homesteader?
Hebrews 11: These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
