By: Chase Longo

 Scientific name: Electrophorus electricus  Kingdom: Animalia  Phylum: Chordata  Class: Osteichtyes  Evolved completely about 7 million years ago  Not actually eels, but knifefish

 Elongated, cylindrical body  2 meters long (6ft)  20 kg (45lbs)  Largest of the gymnotiformes

 Live in fresh water ◦ River floodplains, swamps creeks coastal plains  Often live in the muddy bottom of calm bodies of water and stagnant rivers.  Amazon and Orinoco Rivers

 Feed mostly on invertebrates  Adults may eat fish or small mammals  Hatchlings will eat younger embryos, eggs, shrimp, or small crabs

 The male eel makes a nest  The female lays eggs in it during the dry season  Up to 3000 eggs will hatch at one time

 Population: Unknown  They generate a shock of 500 watts (500 volts and 1 ampere) on average  They can shock up to 700 watts  Human beings die at as little as 0.75 ampere

 Can control the intensity of their shocks  Eels can be used to generate electricity for human purposes  In Japan, two eels in a tank were used to light up a Christmas tree  Eels are very hostile and will kill and animal it is with besides another of its own species

1. When did the electric eel evolve completely? 2. How many watts can an eel generate? 3. What two rivers do the electric eel live in? 4. What gender makes the breeding nest? 5. What class does the electric eel belong to?

1. 7 million years ago 2. 700 watts 3. Amazon and Orinoco 4. Male 5. Osteichtyes
