12 Battle of Britain – What Happened?  After the defeat of France in 1940, Hitler turned his attention to England  The Plan: To defeat Britain, Hitler needed to control the skies  Once he controlled the sky, a German invasion force would be launched along the English Channel  Operation Sea Lion  Strategy: Destroy British air fields so they could not repair their planes quick enough  Problem: Germany changed its strategy and began to bomb cities, allowing Britain to repair their planes and defeat the German air force
