Introduction Dieting and eating behaviours in school age children as applied to teaching grade 6 students. Typically starting around age 11 (grade 6) is when the issue of self image becomes more important and can influence children’s eating behaviour. It’s useful to start addressing the issue of dieting and eating behaviour to inform the students of the importance of healthy eating.

E-Stat http://estat.statcan.ca/ A useful website for teachers and students produced by Statistics Canada. It contains data from surveys completed by students ages 11 to 15 all around the world. Students can use the data to study information about students similar to themselves and compare information about students of different ages and from other parts of the world. Teachers can use this to integrate subjects areas and help gain interest because the data came from real students and has

Expectations Grade 6 Health & Physical Education Healthy Living/Healthy Eating Analyse personal eating habits in a variety of situations (e.g. at home, in school, in restaurants).

Expectations Grade 6 Math Collection and Organization of Data Read, interpret, and draw conclusions from primary data (e.g., survey results, measurement, observations) and from secondary data (e.g., sports data in the newspaper, data from the Internet about movies) presented in charts, tables, and graphs (including continuous line graphs)

Questions Look at the line graph displaying the relationship between males and females controlling their weight to answer the following questions. What may be possible trends? For example, What may the percentages be for 17 year olds? What are possible explanations for the differences in gender and the increase in age for those doing something to control their weight?

Questions Look at the pie chart displaying the percentage of grade 6 males and females who are doing something to control their weight vs. those who are not. From the line graph data, what do you think the percentage of those doing something to control their weight would be like for both genders in a grade 8 class (i.e. 13 year olds)?
