1 Book Club Procedures Form groups of 3-5 students. Choose a book to read as a group. Divide the book into three sections to guide your discussion. Assign jobs for each person in the group. Everyone is required to help with every part, but one person will be in charge of each job. Turn in the following information: Group names, book title, section page numbers, job assignments

2 Jobs Discussion Director – Each person creates one inferential question per section that would actively engage your classmates in a meaningful discussion about this novel. These questions should NOT be ones of direct recall, but rather ones in which the answer must be inferred by the reader. Words to help you write these types of questions are: evaluate, judge, distinguish, why, compare, contrast, explain, analyze, and how. Word Wizard -- Locate words, ideas, events, and concepts as you read that you need to clarify in order to better understand your novel. Each person completes a word map for 2 words per section. Connector – Making real-world connections is a vital life skill that helps a reader understand what he or she reads. Therefore, connecting the information in a passage to something with which you were already familiar helps you to comprehend and make meaning of the author’s words. As you read, connect the ideas to yourself, to other literature, or to the world in general. Each person is expected to write a short paragraph about one personal connection per section. Passage Master – Each group member selects one passage per section that you feel is crucial to the reader’s understanding of a major or minor theme in your book. Use the RACES strategy to cite the text and explain in a short paragraph how this passage shows a major or minor theme.

3 RUBRIC Organize your group’s work with a cover, title page, table of contents, section dividers, and numbered pages. The person in charge of each job is responsible for gathering the materials from group members and organizing their section(s). Work may be turned in as a hard copy booklet or in an on-line portfolio. In place of one or more of the listed options, you may choose to illustrate your novel, create a game based on the story, complete or create a webquest, create a bulletin board, script and perform a play, or otherwise demonstrate your understanding of the book. Your final product MUST include inferential questions, themes, personal connections, and new vocabulary. Your proposal must explain how these will be addressed.
