Water Cycle Terms

Condensation: Gas  Liquid because of cooling Evaporation: Liquid  Gas because of heating Precipitation: Liquid falling to the earth; rain, snow, sleet, hail Sublimation: Solid  Gas; skip the liquid stage, happens high in the mountains (dry ice)

Runoff: Water flowing on the surface to lower area, caused by gravity Groundwater: any water below the ground Aquifer: Collection of groundwater storage Water Table: The top of the aquifer, changes in depth as the water level rises and falls Infiltration: water soaking into the ground from the surface

Energy Source: Sun

3 Facts Flooding occurs when the water table is too high or the ground is too frozen for infiltration Condensation near the ground is called fog Water can be artificially recharged into the ground where the water table is low Contrails are man made clouds from the airplanes exhaust condensing

Questions 1. Driving forces: Sun 2. We have the same amount of water on Earth that we did 1000 years ago 3. flooding: high water table, or frozen ground 4. plants breathing is called Transpiration 5. sublimation happens high in the mtns 6. water table lowers because of wells and drought.
