Haslingden High School and Sixth Form English and maths are essential skills for students to develop to maximise their chances of future success All students will be entered for 2 GCSEs in English - English language and English literature Because of the importance that is placed on English, the reformed GCSEs are much more academically challenging Both are now 100% examination and coursework is no more

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form ENGLISH LANGUAGE There will be two examinations at the end of year 11 totalling 3 hours and 45 minutes The first is '20thC Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing' worth 40% -Reading comprehension of a fiction text -A piece of narrative writing from a choice of titles The second is '19thC and 21stC Non-fiction Reading and Transactional/Persuasive Writing' worth 60% - Reading comprehension of two non-fiction texts - one from the 1800s and the other from the present day - Two non-fiction writing tasks

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form ENGLISH LITERATURE Again, there will be two examinations at the end of year 11 totalling 4 hours and 30 minutes and these exams are closed book The first is 'Shakespeare and Poetry' worth 40% - Extract analysis from studied Shakespeare play - Essay based on studied Shakespeare play - Poetry from 1789 to present day - two essays The second is 'Post-1914 Prose/Drama, 19thC Novel and Unseen Poetry' worth 60% - Extended essay on post-1914 text - Extended essay on 19thC novel - Poetry from 20thC/21stC - two essays

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form There are 18 poems in the anthology (1789-present day) that students must know off by heart They must have a full working knowledge of the studied Shakespeare play, A Christmas Carol and Blood Brothers and there are many sites on the internet that will assist their understanding It is essential that students read regularly and widely from a range of sources Students would benefit greatly from an understanding of current affairs

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form All students will be entered for GCSE Mathematics. There will be two tiers of entry Foundation Grades (1 to 5) and Higher (4 to 9) The qualification will consist of three exams each worth 80 marks. Each exam will last 1 hour 30 minutes. Paper 1 will be non-calculator, paper 2 and 3 will be calculator. Each paper will continue to build in difficulty as the paper progresses.

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form The assessments will cover the following content headings 1. Number 2. Algebra 3. Ratio, proportion and rates of change 4. Geometry and measures 5. Statistics and Probability Each assessment area will be weighted according to the following percentages

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form Some formulae previously listed will no longer be given and students will be expected to memorise these e.g. Quadratic Formula, Trigonometry Formulae There are some topics which are new to both Higher and Foundation: Venn diagrams. Gradients of lines and rates of change. Geometric sequences. Relationship between two quantities as a ratio.

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form There are also some topics which are new to the Higher Tier: Quadratic Inequalities Nth term of a quadratic sequence Rates for change Inverse and composite functions Lots of previously higher topics have moved onto the foundation paper such as: Standard Form Factorising Quadratics Solving Simultaneous Equations Mass, Density and Volume Compound Interest Trigonometry

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form Due to the more difficult algebraic skills necessary for the Higher Tier, it seems there is a shift towards this being a course for preparation of A-Level. We envisage Sets 1-2 taking higher tier and Sets 3-5 taking foundation tier, although every student is assessed on an individual basis before a decision is taken.

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form Behaviour for Learning A – Excellent: an exemplary attitude at all times – concentrates and participates eagerly in all activities, keen and always willing to try their best. B – Very good: a very good attitude, working hard, concentrates in lessons and participates well in a variety of tasks including homework C – Room for Improvement: does what is required but tends to lack self-motivation and concentration. Often needs encouragement to participate and work/effort is of an inconsistent standard. D – Unsatisfactory: often needs significant encouragement to engage with the lesson and related tasks. Work/effort regularly not representative of their best endeavours. E - Serious cause for concern: a generally negative attitude to tasks set, often reluctant to participate willingly, regularly distracted or distracting others in lessons. Work is rarely completed to an acceptable standard.

B: Very good: usually completed to the best of a student’s ability and submitted on time. C: Room for Improvement: quality is variable and/or not submitted consistently on time D: Unsatisfactory: regularly completed to an unsatisfactory standard and/or regularly not submitted on time. E: Serious cause for concern: persistently completed to an unsatisfactory standard and/or persistently not submitted on time.

Haslingden High School and Sixth Form Key Piece Indicates the students’ current GCSE (or equivalent) grade achieved in a specific piece of work or test, carried out during the Block Assessment week. Ongoing grade Indicates the current GCSE (or equivalent) grade that the student is working at, taking into account all work completed during the term, not just during the assessment week. Target grade Shows the GCSE (or equivalent) grade that a student should aspire to at the end of the Year 11, based on prior attainment and a teacher’s professional judgement. Predicted Grade (not reported in Block A, Year 9) Shows the most likely grade that the student will achieve at the end of KS4 based on all the current evidence.
