3 Today we are going to discuss two theories about why governments exist and what their role(s) in society should be. But first, what do you guys know about "the government"?

4 government: the ruling authority for a community any organization that has the power to make & carry out laws and decisions for the community But, what does this mean??

5 GOVT. Who? Where do they get their $$/power? What does the govt. do for us? (Think, public services...)

9 So, do we need governments? John Locke (1632 - 1704) Thomas Hobbes (1588 - 1679) 1. How does Hobbes describe humans in the state of nature? 2. Describe the "contract" people will enter into with the government. Why would people do this? 3. Who is Leviathan and how would a Leviathan state rule? 4. How does Locke describe humans in the state of nature? 5. Describe the "contract" people will enter into with the government. Why would people do this? 6.
