3 The Male Reproductive System / Body Basics / Kid’s Health: Male Reproductive System Kid’s Health: Male Reproductive System / www.kidshealth.org www.kidshealth.org / Body Basics / Kid’s Health: Male Reproductive System Kid’s Health: Male Reproductive System / www.kidshealth.org www.kidshealth.org

4 Organs / Penis / The external reproductive organ composed of spongy tissue containing many blood vessels / Testes (Testicles) / Two small glands that produce sperm. They hang outside the body in the scrotum / Scrotum / The “sac” that protects the sperm by keeping the temperature slightly below the normal body temperature / Penis / The external reproductive organ composed of spongy tissue containing many blood vessels / Testes (Testicles) / Two small glands that produce sperm. 5 Organs / Epididymis / The tubes in each testis join a larger coiled tube called the epididymis, located at the surface of each testis. / Sperm are temporarily stored here are they mature / Vas Defrens / Tubes that extend from the lower end of each epididymis and connect with the urethra. / Urethra / A small tube that extends from the bladder as well as from each of the vas defrens through the penis and outside the body / Epididymis / The tubes in each testis join a larger coiled tube called the epididymis, located at the surface of each testis. / Sperm are temporarily stored here are they mature / Vas Defrens / Tubes that extend from the lower end of each epididymis and connect with the urethra. / Urethra / A small tube that extends from the bladder as well as from each of the vas defrens through the penis and outside the body

7 Organs / Seminal Vesicles / Glands that are attached to the vas deferens near the base of the bladder. / They excrete a fluid that mixes with sperm to make them more mobile and to provide nourishment. / Sperm: male sex cell; in semen / Semen: seminal fluid; released when a man ejaculates / Seminal Vesicles / Glands that are attached to the vas deferens near the base of the bladder. / They excrete a fluid that mixes with sperm to make them more mobile and to provide nourishment. / Sperm: male sex cell; in semen / Semen: seminal fluid; released when a man ejaculates

8 Glands / Prostate Gland / Small gland that surrounds the urethra. It secretes fluid which becomes part of the semen. / Cowper’s Gland / Located below the prostate gland, it secretes a fluid that mixes with semen and lubricates the urethra and neutralizes acid content (urine is highly acidic) before the semen is ejaculated. / The secretion also creates a drop of clear fluid prior to ejaculation know as pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum). / Prostate Gland / Small gland that surrounds the urethra. 9 Procedures & Conditions / Circumcision / A procedure in which the foreskin is removed. Very common in US culture. / Hernia / Occurs when a part of an organ pushes through an opening of the membrane or muscle that usually contains the organ. / A common hernia in males is an inguinal hernia. This occurs when a weak spot in the abdominal wall located near the top of the scrotum tears. A muscle strain can cause part of the intestine to pull through into the scrotum. / Circumcision / A procedure in which the foreskin is removed.
