Male Reproductive System Anatomy

Ground Rules Respect what other people say; no put-downs Be sensitive to other people’s feelings Not answering a question is all right Respect other people’s differences, family values, and traditions Keep discussions and questions away from a personal level – No individual stories; no names Keep confidential all comments made by students Remember that questions are not ‘dumb’ Use scientific terms – no slang Remember all rules of classroom behavior Raise hand to ask question or respond Submit questions of true concern to the teacher at the end of class (Question Box) NO SIDE CONVERSATIONS

Male Reproductive System I. Penis – external organ A. Functions - part of both Urinary and Reproductive Systems 1. Passage of urine 2. Passage of semen – fluid that may contain sperm 3. Reacts to sensual feelings – erection 3. Reacts to sensual feelings – erection B.Parts - B.Parts - 1. Foreskin- skin surrounding the tip of the penis may be surgically removed by circumcision (at birth) 2. Shaft - body of the penis - blood vessels/spongy tissue under skin 3. Urethra – for passage of urine or semen

Male Reproductive System II. Scrotum – external sac of skin A. Supports and protects both testes B. Skin contains muscle fibers C. Regulates temperature of testes for sperm production D. Keeps testes 1 to 8 degrees below internal body temperature

Male Reproductive System III. Testicles (Testes) – male reproductive organs and glands A. Two glands/organs B. Produce sperm cells – approx. 150 million each day C. Produce male hormone - testosterone D. Tubules – sperm production

Male Reproduction VI. Epididymis – stores sperm A. Coiled tubes at top side of testes B. Used for storage and maturation of sperm C. Unused sperm will disintegrate into bloodstream V. Vas Deferens – tubes through which sperm pass A. Two tubes 15 to 18 inches long B. Connects epididymis to the seminal vesicles

Male Reproductive System VI. Seminal Vesicle – stores sperm prior to ejaculation A. Two glands behind bladder B. Connects Vas Deferens to Urethra – ejaculatory duct C. Secretes fluid to provide nutrients for sperm life

Male Reproductive System VII. Prostate Gland – production of Semen A. Surrounds urethra; below bladder B. Secretes milky substance important for sperm life, motility C. Prostate fluid and Seminal fluid combine to form semen

Male Reproductive System VII. Cowper Glands – Bulbo-urethral Glands A. Two glands just below Prostate Gland B. Secretes substance to “clean” urethra prior to ejaculation C. Pre-ejaculatory discharge does contain sperm X. Urethra – Passage for urine or semen A. Internal tube from bladder to tip of penis A. Internal tube from bladder to tip of penis B. Part of both Reproductive System and Urinary System B. Part of both Reproductive System and Urinary System

Male Reproductive System X. Problems of the Male System A. Inguinal Hernia A. Inguinal Hernia B. Cancers B. Cancers 1. Testicular 1. Testicular 2. Prostate 2. Prostate C. Sterility C. Sterility XI. Role of the Male in Reproduction XI. Role of the Male in Reproduction A. Provide sperm A. Provide sperm
