6 A few important terms: Colony – a territory under control of another country. Colonialism - is creating colonies by taking over and controlling the territory of other people. Empire - a group of colonies united and ruled by a single country, often under a monarch (King or Queen). Draw a picture that shows the meaning of the terms above and their relationships to one another.

7 How did colonisation take place? Renaissance (C14th-C16th) Age of Discovery (C15th-C17th) ContactColonisation Europeans discover that the world is round and develop new technologies Europeans use new technologies to travel AROUND the world After contact, explorers return home with exotic goods and amazing stories of wealth European Kings send colonists to seize new lands

8 Why did Colonisation take place? Colonialism normally refers to a period of history from the 15th to the 20th century when people from Europe established colonies on other continents. The reasons for the practice of colonialism at this time include: Money – there was money to be made, selling exotic goods in Europe and European goods in colonies Power – through conquest, increasing the land, subjects (people) and wealth of the King or Queen Opportunity – Europeans could escape harsh rulers and religious persecution by starting a new life in a colony Mission – Many colonists believed that non-Europeans were backwards and needed civilising
