Empire - a group of colonies united and ruled by a single country, often under a monarch (King or Queen). The reasons for the practice of colonialism at this time include: Money – there was money to be made, selling exotic goods in Europe and European goods in colonies Power – through conquest, increasing the land, subjects (people) and wealth of the King or Queen Opportunity – Europeans could escape harsh rulers and religious persecution by starting a new life in a colony Mission – Many colonists believed that non-Europeans were backwards and needed civilising
