Cimmerians- lived along the Black Sea and settled much of southern Ukraine Slavs- built towns along rivers( Dnieper), Black Sea and in western Russia Vikings- Varangian Russes conquered and formed the state of Kiev Mongols under Genghis Kahn took control from 1200 AD to 1380 AD

Distance and climate has aided in the defense of Russia and Eurasia Extreme heat in the summers Extreme cold, snow and blizzards in the winter Huge land area to control Difficult to supply invading armies – great distances Scorched the earth policy

16 2.4 Serfdom to Industrialization
Serfdom was started by Ivan the Terrible Took land from nobles and gave to his supporters Made peasants live and work for land owners Few rights Couldn’t leave without permission Industrialization and workers Serf system outlawed so they would have factory workers Bad working conditions Low pay Worker strikes

17 2.5 Soviet Union The Bolsheviks led a revolt of the workers to take over industry and government( Russian Revolution) New system was a combination of Communism and Socialism Controlled everything in society Owned all businesses Controlled the distribution of goods and food Owned all agricultural production- told what to produce People were guaranteed jobs, food and a home
