1 Science Fair Teacher Meeting January 8, 2014

2 District Science Fair: February 13, 2014 State Science Fair: March 27 & 28 in Ames State Science Fair registration and paperwork due by March 4, 2014 to ISU Students must be registered online for the state competition before paperwork can be submitted (you must also first be registered as a teacher) http://www.sciencefairofiowa.org/registration.html Dates to Remember

3 District Science Fair February 13, 2014 Science Center of Iowa Student project check-in @ 4:00 Judging begins at 5:00 Awards ceremony at 7:00 Science Center admission will be free to all DMPS staff, students and families High School category will be judged for feedback purposes only. All HS projects will automatically advance to the state competition. Teachers must retain all student paperwork and forms. Please do not give these to the students.

4 Other Important Notes Please send all student names/project titles and grade/category to Kim O’Donnell by January 24. Please highly encourage/require all SB students to participate Each building may send up to 45 projects to the district fair. Top 3 in each category/grade level at the district fair will automatically be invited to go to state, however the teacher may send more if requested. A bus will be provided to and from Ames on March 27 and 28. (we will do t-shirts for the students again this year!)

5 State Science Fair Changes for 2014 NO late paperwork will be accepted. No exceptions! Paperwork must be received by March 4 th, not just postmarked by that date. Paperwork may be mailed, faxed, emailed (PDF only) or hand delivered to ISU. Seminar event is back! Students must submit a research paper to be invited to participate. Event will be held at Ames HS. Awards ceremony will begin at 7:00pm on the 28 th and will be no longer than 45 minutes. Contact Andrea Spencer at aspence@iastate.edu with any questions

6 Student Paperwork Required for All Projects All projects require the following: Adult Sponsor Checklist Student Checklist Form 1A Approval Form 1B (one for each student) SSTFI permission form (one for each student) Abstract (must be displayed vertically on project) Research plan with bibliography (5 sources)

7 Additional Paperwork for Certain Projects Human participants form and informed consent (for any projects involving people) Regulated research setting form (for any project not done at home or school) Qualified Scientist form ( required for any project involving humans, vertebrates or potentially hazardous biological agents) Risk Assessment form (required for any project using hazardous chemicals, devices and microorganisms) Vertebrate Animal form 5A or 5B (required for any project involving vertebrates. Requires a veterinarian signature) Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents form 6A (required for any project involving microorganisms, fresh/frozen tissue, blood or body fluids) Human and Vertebrate animal tissue form 6B (required for projects using fresh or frozen tissue) Continuation projects form 7 (required for any projects that are a continuation of projects previously presented at the fair).

8 Other Project Guidelines Photo Use Policy: Photos may be used on a student display as long as they are not deemed offensive or inappropriate. All MUST have an attached credit line, 12pt font on address labels) Electricity Fee: 15.00 will be collected on the day of the fair Project display may NOT include: living organisms, preserved specimens, human or animal food, all chemicals including water, sharp items. See display and safety rules for complete list. *Abstract must be displayed vertically at/on the project

9 Students who are FFA members may also participate in the FFA Agriscience Fair. The fair is held concurrently with the state science fair and will only require you to click a few extra boxes when entering a student online. Student projects must fit one of the following categories: Animal Systems, Environmental Services/Natural Resource Systems, Food Products and Processing Systems, Plant Systems, Power, Structural and Technical Systems, Social Systems FFA Agriscience Fair
