Mammals

Nervous System

FACT#1: The brain of a mammal is 15 x heavier than the brain of a similarly sized fish, amphibian or reptile.

Parts and function of the brain: Cerebrum:  Largest part of a mammal’s brain  Folded and creased to increase overall surface area  Center of intellect, memory, language  Controls all motor functions  Receives and interprets sensory info  Grows thicker as you learn and use it  Divided into 2 hemispheres: left and right  Left controls right side of body  Right controls left side of body

Made up of 4 lobes: –Frontal: Motor skills, reasoning and higher cognitive skills –Parietal: Processes touch, pain and pressure –Temporal: Processes sounds and language –Occipital: Intreprets visual stimuli

FACT #2: Unfolded Brain Surface Area=1m 2 Average Brain Weighs= 3 lbs

Cerebellum Responsible for smooth, coordinated movement. Helps to maintain posture, muscle tone and equilibrium

Brain Stem Regulates heart beat, respiration and blood pressure. Helps control swallowing, coughing, sneezing and vomiting

Thalamus Main relay center between spinal cord and cerebrum.

Hypothalamus Controls homeostasis such as body temperature, appetite and water balance Links nervous and endocrine systems.
